The following is an example of how the underwriters we’ve instructed to facilitate The Futura Plan are fully engaged with employers.

The challenge

The employer was a large cruise line with 6,500 crew.

They had a private medical insurance policy that covered both the crew and their immediate family. The policy covered around 17,000 members.

However, despite the significant number of people covered by the policy, there was a surprisingly low number of claims on it during the first 12 months.

Our underwriters identified the lower-than-expected claims history on the policy and – without waiting until the next annual renewal of the cover – proactively contacted the employer to highlight this. On further investigation, the employees stated that they were worried about making a claim on the policy, as they felt it might damage their employment record or career prospects.

Our solution

The employer ran a series of seminars for its employees, outlining the benefits package available to them and encouraging them to make a claim on the policy where appropriate.

The employer was aware that, particularly when their employees spend several months at a time away from their families, poor mental health can have a significant effect on morale and efficiency on a cruise ship.

The results

Receiving positive messages from home when loved ones are sick and in need of treatment makes a significant difference to employees who could otherwise feel isolated or have little opportunity to communicate with their families. In addition, knowing that their families are being looked after while they are not able to be there gives them greater peace of mind and aids concentration while at work.

This is a good example of why it’s important to engage with the right people. At Futura, we only engage with companies and suppliers that have the best interests of the people they insure at the heart of their operation.
